Lamole, Panzano and Greve in Chianti

The Castle of Lamole is situated along the municipal road, avery characteristic tuscan road, leading to the Lamole small town and it precedes the tuscan castle of about 500 metres. The road goes up from the tuscan castle towards the town and it is possible to cover it walking for just 5 minutes. It shows one among the most suggestive panoramic views of the Chianti hills.

Lamole, whose name comes out of the words “la mole (the mass)”, the stone above which the tuscan castle was built, or out of the ancient word “lame”, the natural stone basin to which the rivers converge, is situated in a dominant position at about 598 metres above sea level, in the Greve river valley. The small town of Lamole is surrounded along the whole valley by chestnut and oak woods and overlooks on a suggestive panoramic view of vineyards which once used to be cultivated only with particular species of tuscan wine typical of Lamole and selected by the peasants. Nowadays, much to our regret, they don't exist anymore in its original form. In Lamole is the little San Donato roman church (XIII century), unfortunately transformed in the XIX century and nowadays still in its new aspect, deprived of its charming and of its medieval historical signs. Since several years the San Donato chuch is place of a Concert Season, a weekly program of musical classic concerts which goes from July to Sptember.

During the Medieval Age Greve in Chianti was simply a “mercatale” (market place), just because of its position on the valley floor along the river Greve and near the ancient castles and the numerous fortified boroughs.
In the three-cornered Square took place the market businesses to which hastened the inhabitants of Montefioralle, Panzano anf Lamole. Typical arcades, house, terraces and the main public buildings like the Holy Cross Church (situated at the top of the Square) and the municipal building have been built in the centuries around the Square. Through the building of many streets, Greve became an important crossroads between Florence, Siena and the Valdarno.

The state route 222 leading to Florence and Siena, after a route winding along sweet ups and downs and skirting vineyards, olive trees, castles and farms, soon after the small town of Greve, crosses Panzano , which lies upon a ridge between the Greve valley and the Pesa valley. On top of the hill is possible to recognize the ancient core of the town at about 500 metres above sea level with its roman origins and still keeping the rests of the ancient tuscan castle of Panzano built in the same period as the Castle of Lamole. The two castles share some medieval architectonical elements and a similarity in the way the peasants settled in still evident nowadays.
